Past Paper - Component 2 Exam

1A) Choose two camera shots used in this extract. Explore why they are used.
Panning shots are used in the extract of Luther, they have been used to follow the action in the scene this connotes the feeling of a viewer to be as if the are following the action themselves. For example we see a panning shot used at the start of the extract where Luther is seen to be chasing Henry Madsen while he is running away and trying to escape where the camera pans. This would also build up tension for the audience as we see them running and we are being shown the action.

Another shot used in the extract would be a low angle shot used where we are shown Luther from a low perspective. In this context, it signifies how Luther is superior and more important in the scene connoting how Henry Madsen is less superior to Luther. This is also supported by the high angle shots of us seeing Henry from above. The low angle shot signifies how much power Luther has over Henry and the danger of his situation

1B) How far are the settings in this extract typical of the genre? Explore examples from the extract.
In the extract, it begins with an establishing shot shows an isolated location such as the building which signifies an abandoned setting and generates enigmas which is conventional of crime dramas. The iconography in the scene also shows typical conventions of a crime drama such as barbed wire, dangerous objects and a rickety walkway or dodgy broken walkways. The binary opposites of the outfits to the setting connotes that the characters do not belong there and their actions such as running and chasing shows they could be up to criminal or suspicious behavior. Another scene typical of the crime drama genre is the typical suburban house as it is a familiar scene to be set it and relatable, making it more like “real life”. This would make them more engaged in the show or build more tension as the setting is relatable to an audience so they can feel like they are part of the crime drama. It would help the sense of reality making an audience more involved.

2) How does the Uses and Gratifications theory explain why audiences watch crime dramas or sitcoms?
The Use and Gratifications theory is applied to crime dramas. This is shown in Luther in many ways for example people may watch a crime drama for entertainment/diversion. Crime dramas are constructed to contain multiple enigmas and an audience can enjoy them by working to solve a mystery along with the characters. Doing this would get an audience to escape their everyday problems and stress and acts as a diversion from their reality. They also find entertainment from solving a crime or mystery before the hero of the show does creating the sense of pleasure for an audience. Personal identity is explored in Luther meaning an audience can build a relationship with a character and relate to them allowing a more realistic feel and to feel more personally involved. Luther is portrayed as a conventional flawed hero throughout the show and an audience may be able to relate or see themselves in the character, the show also shows more diversity in terms of strong female characters like Alice which reflect changing gender roles and allows audiences to connect with central characters and feel empowered. Personal relationships or social interaction is shown through Luther as audiences can discuss the show with one another in person, to family etc or even on social media. Enigmas, narrative arcs and twists would be able to be discussed with one another. Luther gives an audience the information on how a modern detective might operate and inside looks on the job and the role of his work. This would show an audience gathering information from the show and being able to see how the job may affect the characters and how to solve a crime.

3A) How far do the representations in music websites reinforce particular messages and values?

4A) Explain how contexts influence music videos. Refer to Bad Blood (Taylor Swift, 2014)
This song is from Taylor Swift's fifth album '1989' was the biggest selling album of 2014 in America and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The video for the song was released in 2015 by Vevo and held the record for most views in 24 hours. The original song album version of the song was relatively poorly reviewed by critics but the Kendrick Lamar remix featured in the video was more successfully. The song was mainly influenced by Taylor's personal feud with she had with Katy Perry. This is evident through the songs title 'Bad Blood' and the lyrics "cause baby now we got bad blood". Her music video also connoted a change in her star image from a 'girl next door' image supported by her Love Story song and visuals to a strong, powerful, independent business woman. Taylor's image also overall influences her songs as her songs are often inspired by her life and her relationships or overall issues she has faced in her life such as "We Are Never Getting Back Together" or "I Knew You Were Trouble". In the video, Swift uses many of her famous friends and a collection of stars from across a range of media genres to help underscore its themes of female empowerment. This and its high production values also reinforce Swift's personal power within the music industry as she has many links and high authority links.
